  • Tragic Hero: A literary character who makes an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and external forces, brings on a tragedy.
  • Archetype: 1. An original model or type after which other similar things are patterned; a prototype. 2. An ideal example of a type; quintessence. 3. In Jungian psychology, an inherited pattern of thought or symbolic imagery derived from the past collective experience and present in the individual unconscious.
  • Hamartia: Tragic flaw
  • Catharsis: 1. Purgation. 2. A psychological technique used to relieve tension and anxiety by bringin repressed feelings and fears to consciousness. 3. The therapeutic result of this process; abreaction.

This is the table that we used to find out who was a tragic hero and who wasn't:

Born of noble birth?
Responsible for own fate?
Has a tragic flaw?
Doomed to make a serious error in judgment?
Falls from great heights or from high esteem?
Realizes s/he has made an irreversable mistake?
Faces and accepts death with honor?
Meets a tragic death?
